How to Edit Your Website Safely Using Wix Content Mode

One of the most common worries we hear from clients is:
“I want to update my website… but I’m scared I’ll break it.”
Good news. Wix actually gives you a special editing environment designed exactly for this. It’s called Content Mode.

Content Mode allows you to update your website text, images, links and basic information without changing the design, layout, spacing, or structure we carefully built for you.
In other words, you can keep your site up to date without accidentally moving things, resizing sections, or making the website look different.
What Content Mode Is (And Why You Should Use It)
Think of your website like a restaurant menu inside a framed display.
Editor Mode = You are moving the frame, resizing the glass, and changing the lighting
Content Mode = You are simply replacing the paper menu inside the frame
Content Mode protects the design.
You can:
Change wording
Replace photos
Update staff info
Update pricing
Change links
Add blog posts
Update opening hours
But you can’t accidentally move sections, delete elements, or break mobile layouts.
That is exactly why we recommend clients always use Content Mode for day-to-day updates.
How to Open Content Mode (Step-by-Step)
Step 1: Go to your Wix Dashboard
First, go to www.wix.com and log into your account.
If you have multiple websites:You will be taken to your Sites page where you can see all of your websites.Hover over the website you want to edit and click Select Site. This will open your Wix dashboard for that specific website.
If you only have one website:Going to wix.com and logging in will take you straight to your Wix dashboard automatically.
Step 2: Find the “Edit Site” button
Once you are on your dashboard, you will see your homepage with the “Welcome back” message at the top.
Locate the Edit Site button (see screenshot below).

Step 3: Open Content Mode
Next to the Edit Site button is a small dropdown arrow.
Click the dropdown arrow and then click Content Mode.

Step 4: You’re now safely inside your website
You will now be inside your website in Content Mode.
Simply click on any section of the page and the editable content will appear on the right-hand side panel, where you can safely update text, images, and links.

You can now make your changes without affecting the layout or design of the website.
When you are ready for your changes to appear publicly, click Publish.
Important Note
The editor may look slightly different depending on whether your website is built using Wix Editor or Wix Studio. However, the process and buttons remain the same, so you can follow the same steps regardless of which version your website uses.

What You Should Not Use Editor Mode For
The normal Wix Editor allows full design control. This is what we use as designers.
It also means you can accidentally:
Move sections
Change spacing
Break mobile view
Hide elements
Delete important components
Many website issues we fix come from clients entering the full editor when they only needed Content Mode.
So as a general rule:
If you are updating information, always use Content Mode.
When You Should Contact Us Instead
Please email us instead of editing if you want to:
Add a new page
Change layout
Redesign a section
Add booking systems
Add eCommerce features
Change navigation/menu
Connect domains or email
Those require proper design work and technical setup.
Final Tip
You cannot “break” your live website immediately. Changes only appear publicly once you press Publish.
